OTHER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DISABILITIES - Sidorela 5°E

Cerebral palsy is a group of chronic disorders that affect some areas of the brain. People with cerebral palsy have difficulty maintaining balance or walking. There are 4 main types of cerebral palsy:
  • Spastic,
  • Ataxic,
  • Athetoid,
  • Mixed.

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but many therapeutic options can maximise the physical and mental potential of an affected person.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which groups of nerve cells in the brain sometimes send abnormal signals causing strange sensations, emotions, behaviour, convulsions and muscle spasms. Epilepsy is a disorder with many possible causes and the most common causes are:
  • Developmental or genetic conditions,
  • Metabolic abnormalities,
  • Brain trauma and tumors,
  • Degenerative disorders.

Epilepsy is not contagious. Medical treatment methods can achieve full or partial control of seizures in 85% of cases. Medical treatment, surgical treatment and dietary treatment are the main modern treatment methods.

Mental retardation is characterised by significantly subaverage intellectual functioning associated with limitations in adaptive behaviour. The causes are:
  • Prenatal causes,
  • Perinatal causes,
  • Postnatal causes.

In many cases, however, the cause is unknown. The symptoms are: poor intellectual development, infantile behaviour, lack of curiosity, poor learning ability and difficulty at school.

There is no cure for mental retardation.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is an inherited disorder characterised by rapidly progressive muscle weakness which starts from the legs. Symptoms usually appear in males 1 to 6 years old. Bones develop abnormally, so skeletal deformities are common. There is no cure for this disorder.
