BONE - BOOK 2 CHAPTER 2

Book 2, chapter 2 of Bone starts with Phoney running a booth at the fair. He's taking people's bets for the race. Fone walks over to the booth and Phoney leaves to go talk to him in private. Once they're alone, they run into Smiley. He's wearing a cow costume that he made, and is calling himself "the mystery cow." This makes Phoney angry because many people are voting on the mystery cow and he doesn't want anyone to know it doesn't exist. Fone didn't know that Phoney and Smiley were scheming, and he wants to know what they're up to. He tells Phoney to tell him everything that night, and then Phoney goes to work. The chapter then switches over to a dream Thorn is having. She's just a child in the dream, being taken somewhere by someone wearing a hooded cape. He then leaves her and tells her not to follow him. The dream ends with Thorn standing in a cave with some dragons. Thorn wakes up from the dream and wakes Fone up to tell him about it. She tells him to take out the map. They look at it together, and Thorn feels like she drew the map when she was in the cave. They plan to ask grandmother about it the next day after the race.

BONE - BOOK 1 CHAPTER 6

Chapter 6 of Bone starts with Fone, Thorn, and the dragon arriving at grandmother's burning house. Thorn runs to find her, and sees that she's fine. Grandma had fought off the rat monsters. She tells Thorn and Fone that they should head into the city for the races. Then grandma talks to Bone alone while Thorn takes the luggage. Grandma asks Fone why the rat monsters would want him. Fone is unable to answer because he doesn't know. They wonder if maybe it was because of Phoney. Then, the chapter shifts over to Phoney's point of view. He's working in a bar with their cousin Smiley. They're talking about how they hope to win money at the races. Phoney is washing dishes when "the hooded one" appears. He tells Phoney that he is going to kill Fone. Smiley appears and "the hooded one" disappears. Then, the chapter goes back to Thorn, Fone, grandmother, and the cows arriving in the city. They're greeted by the owner of the bar who says he has two workers that look like Fone. Finally, Fone is reunited with his cousins. The chapter ends with "the hooded one" watching them and saying that they're safe, but just for now.

AUTISM - Michela - 5°E

Autism is a life-long developmental disability.

Individuals cannot properly understand what they see, hear and sense. When the reality annoys them, they have attacks and start crying, screaming and become aggressive.

The cause of autism is still unknown.
This disorder may be caused by some imbalance in certain chemicals in the brain. It is a disability which makes it hard to communicate to the outside world. There is no cure for autism, but it is treatable. Specially trained teachers can help affected people to live at home and in the community.

DOWN'S SYNDROME - Chiara - 5°E

Down's Syndrome is a genetic disorder due to the presence of an extra chromosome 21.
There are three types of chromosome abnormalities:
1) Trisomy 21
2) Translocation
3) Mosaicism
Some of the physical features in children with Down's syndrome are: slanting of the eyelids, decreased muscle tone, loose ligaments, smaller ears, mouth, hands and feet.
50% of children have one line across the palm (it's a gap between the first and second toes).
The cause is still unknown. There isn't a cure available at the present time.

OTHER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DISABILITIES - Sidorela 5°E

Cerebral palsy is a group of chronic disorders that affect some areas of the brain. People with cerebral palsy have difficulty maintaining balance or walking. There are 4 main types of cerebral palsy:
  • Spastic,
  • Ataxic,
  • Athetoid,
  • Mixed.

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but many therapeutic options can maximise the physical and mental potential of an affected person.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which groups of nerve cells in the brain sometimes send abnormal signals causing strange sensations, emotions, behaviour, convulsions and muscle spasms. Epilepsy is a disorder with many possible causes and the most common causes are:
  • Developmental or genetic conditions,
  • Metabolic abnormalities,
  • Brain trauma and tumors,
  • Degenerative disorders.

Epilepsy is not contagious. Medical treatment methods can achieve full or partial control of seizures in 85% of cases. Medical treatment, surgical treatment and dietary treatment are the main modern treatment methods.

Mental retardation is characterised by significantly subaverage intellectual functioning associated with limitations in adaptive behaviour. The causes are:
  • Prenatal causes,
  • Perinatal causes,
  • Postnatal causes.

In many cases, however, the cause is unknown. The symptoms are: poor intellectual development, infantile behaviour, lack of curiosity, poor learning ability and difficulty at school.

There is no cure for mental retardation.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is an inherited disorder characterised by rapidly progressive muscle weakness which starts from the legs. Symptoms usually appear in males 1 to 6 years old. Bones develop abnormally, so skeletal deformities are common. There is no cure for this disorder.
